Swahili has national language status and serves as a lingua franca in a number of African countries, including Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Swahili is also a minority language spoken by smaller populations of people throughout Burundi, Malawi, Mozambique, Northern Zambia, and Rwanda. Swahili is a first language for many people living in Tanzania, where about 15 million of the world's native Swahili speakers are concentrated. When you include the vast number of people who have adopted Swahili as a second language, it is estimated that there are as many as 100 to 150 million speakers of Swahili, placing it among the most widely spoken languages in the world.

Swahili is the mother tongue of the Swahili people, who primarily reside on the Swahili coast in Southeast Africa. In fact, the word "Swahili" means 'people of the coast.' Swahili is the lingua franca of the African Great Lakes region, which includes the nations of Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. Over 100 million people live within the African Great Lakes region, with many of the region's inhabitants who are born in urban areas speaking Swahili as a first language, and most inhabitants born in rural areas speaking Swahili as a second language.

Swahili's vocabulary is significantly influenced by Arabic. Roughly 20% of Swahili's vocabulary is made up of loanwords, many of which are borrowed from Arabic. In fact, the earliest preserved Swahili literature was written in the Arabic script, although it is now primarily written using the Latin alphabet. About 5% of Swahili vocabulary is derived from English.

A number of language technology applications have been developed for Swahili. Arvi Hurskainen, a Finnish linguistics scholar, has been instrumental in the development of language technology, including language learning software and an electronic dictionary for the Swahili language.
